Kia ora families,
It is great to have engagement for a full week of school! It is hard to believe that we are already heading into week 6 of a 10 week term. We appreciate your patience, having children at school consistently will help us settle into a new year of learning.
Teacher paid union meetings today:
This afternoon many teachers will be attending paid union meetings to negotiate better working conditions. If you have ever spent time in a classroom, you will understand the demands that teachers are put under. Takapuna Primary will remain open this afternoon and children will be supervised by the Leadership team as we want to be able to support families, we appreciate it is not easy to find care. Please see below information outlining key areas of support teachers are requesting. (NZEI Te Riu Roa)
Behaviour/concerns:
A reminder to please contact the classroom teacher if you have any concerns about your child in the first instance and they will work with you. We are a school that caters to children with all different social, emotional and learning needs. Children all have reasons for why they behave the way the do and while we have strong guidelines in place, our job is to work with all our children and their families, to teach them how to solve problems and understand each other. Just like they would later in life, in the work force. We know punitive consequences do not work. The messages they receive from the adults in their lives are critical to developing empathy and understanding.
School Pool:
It is my understanding that parents are feeling frustrated with the pool not being operational. Can I reassure you that we want the pool going as much as you do. It is not an issue of money. We will be sending seperate information with further details for those families that need more clarity on what we are doing and the challenges we face, that are beyond our control.
Cohort entry:
Below you will find information on proposed cohort entry for new 5 year olds starting at Takapuna Primary, if it goes ahead, it will mean you have the option of 2 start dates per term, for those children turning 5. We invite you to give feedback during this consultation period.
Riding bikes to school:
We have reinforced the message for children to stop and walk across the pedestrian crossing when coming to and leaving school. If your child rides to school, please make sure they know the road rules and how to keep safe. Below you will also find additional information on speed limit changes affecting our school area.
Sickness:
Please make sure your child is at home if they are feeling sick, or have any flu like or covid-19 symptoms. Schools need to remain vigilant with our processes, please do not be offended if we need to send children home if they have come to school sick.
Culture Week:
This week our school has focused on celebrating and learning about different cultures. We have over 50 different nationalities in our diverse school community. Children loved the cultural parade and shared lunch in particular. During the parade, we were amazed to see so many parents, probably over 50 came to support! We also invited families to school to share stories about themselves which the children have really enjoyed.
Finally, if there is anything further that you would like to discuss or questions you may have, please do not hesitate to contact me directly on my email – devikat@tps.school.nz
