WE ARE LISTENING TO YOU….
We asked for feedback and want to act on it. Families have been requesting resources and learning about more opportunities to develop their parenting skills. We are very excited to announce that we have organised, funded and partnered up with the Parenting Place to host an insightful and helpful parent evening. If you want to help your children – this is a must attend event!

ANZAC Day Takapuna Parade
It was a beautiful Thursday morning for students, teachers and families of Takapuna Primary to participate in the annual Takapuna Anzac service. We proudly marched, together with other local schools in our school uniform. It was a wonderful event to be a part of. Thanks to Harry (Yr 6) and Anzac (Y2) for laying Takapuna Primary’s Wreath.

Staffing news:
Last term we advertised for a new music teacher, however there was not a suitable appointment made. We plan to try again later in the year. In the meantime, our School Board has funded specialist music teachers to continue with 3 music groups for the rest of the year. This will be for Year 3-6 students who are in Marimba, Choir and Ukelele.
We are also delighted to share some amazing news with our community. We have appointed a wonderful specialist teacher of Te Ao Māori. Kipa will be located in the old Music Room and teach students from Years 1 – 6 for one hour per week. He will also be leading and supporting Takapuna Primary Kapa Haka. He speaks fluent Te Reo Māori and is also a competent user of Sign Language. Our students and community will be very fortunate to learn from him.
We also welcome Ruth, who will be working with Tash in the ESOL (English Language Department) to support children in Year 2 who need additional English language lessons. Ruth is an experienced teacher and is a fluent speaker of Mandarin. We will welcome them on Friday during our Mihi Whakatau.

Bike track:
The team have been working through the holidays and the bike track is making great progress and should be finished by the end of next week. This will be a real asset to our school and an exciting addition to our playground. We will keep you informed of an official opening date.

Closure of car park – thanks for your support
Last term, TPS Board resolved to close vehicle access to Anzac Street during pick up time and add additional teaching staff to help guide parents to use the correct gate when exiting the school using Killarney Street. Thanks to everyone who has supported this, it is a sigh of relief knowing children can exit school safely through Anzac Street. We will closely monitor the exit time traffic for Killarney Street parking going forward.
Lunchtime activities on offer
Last term our students had so much fun joining in a variety of organised activities at break times. This term we have included some new activities for the students to try. These include Jump Jam (aerobics), Art Club, Origami, Flippa Ball, Pasifika Group, Junior Marimba, Chess Club, Te Ao Māori, and Gardening Club to name a few … phew! Participation is entirely optional and teachers will post reminders over HERO each morning. We look forward to sharing some photos later in the term.
Pink Shirt Day
Once again, we will support Pink Shirt day. Our focus will be on discussing the impact of bullying and promoting kindness to each other. Further details to follow. This will be Friday 17 May.

Mitey – Mental Health Education:
Mitey is a New Zealand specific, Years 1-8 approach to embedding mental health education in both teaching and learning. It was developed by the Sir John Kirwan Foundation. Our kura is now in the second year on our Mitey journey.
Children will learn how to recognise and respond to their own mental health and those of others. Cultivating good mental health helps us cope with life’s ups and downs, and to feel comfortable asking for help from others when we need it.
All the teachers at Takapuna Primary are engaging with Professional Development from our expert coaches working for Mitey.
