Mānawatia a Matariki

Thanks to our community:

As you know, TPS came 3rd in the Shop for your School with Shore City. A few of our student leaders (Zena, Elise, Tamina, Thomas, Harry, Luke) together with Denise McConnachie, went to Shore City to receive our cheque. We have put the money to good use by completing the work on the Bike Track, using the money to plant around the pump track, creating signage and finishing landscaping in this area.

Please have a chat to your children about Road Safety:

Here is a message from a community member, we have shared this message with our students.

“Please have a word with the children about road safety. I have just passed three very young children, one had long golden hair who ran out in front of cars at the roundabout, bottom of Lake Pupuke Drive. Luckily as it was busy, the cars were not going fast. Could have had sad consequences.”

Parent Feedback:

Dear Devika

The other night when I was putting [my son] to bed he was counting in te reo (can’t remember why) anyway he said ‘Mum what’s the number 20 in te reo?’. We then had a conversation about numbers and how it worked in Māori. We also talked about Kipa and the numbers. He told me the month and day in te reo. He said it was because they do it every day in their class for the date.

What I thought was interesting is that earlier in the year I had tried to engage [him] in integrating te reo into a game we were playing. He wasn’t interested in the slightest. However, his attitude has completely changed, since then we even continued the numbers conversation in the car the next morning. It was so cool to see him bringing home his learning at school. I think the combination of what his teacher and Kipa are doing has made speaking te reo meaningful for him.

I just wanted to share how exciting it is as a parent when your child shares their learning with you in an informal way and what they are doing is exciting them to ask more questions.

Writing Report:

This will be published before the end of next week. Please check your Hero Report for more information. On our website, you will find more information about Reporting to Parents, what we do and why. It was lovely to see so many families last week for our Open-sessions, where students could show you the progress and learning that is happening in their classrooms.

Year 6 Graduation Evening:

This has been scheduled for Thursday 12 December 2024. It will be an evening event so if you’re a parent to a Year 6 student, please diary this special occasion into your calendars.

Bike Track:

You will notice we have started planting around the bike track pump, if you can please help us keep these plants protected as they take root during after school and weekends. We also remind you to be vigilant with supervision of your children when you’re using this facility after hours.

Be very careful during the wet season, it can be slippery!

School Closed: Friday 28 June – Happy Matariki

Week 10: End of Term 2

Next week, we will finish on Friday at 3:00pm, I hope you all have a wonderful break.

Regards, Devika and the TPS team.

Help Needed:
We have a wonderful outdoor giant chess set. We need some help putting together so it can become a permanent feature for our children to use.

It will take approximately an hour to an hour and a half.

If you can help, please email Lisa at lisad@tps.school.nz

Pizza, wheels & non-uniform day: (ORDERS CLOSE Tuesday 2nd July 10:00am)

Kapa Haka:

Our senior Kapa Haka group joined other local schools at Bayswater School to celebrate Matariki. It was a colourful festival of events to celebrate the Maori new year and our group was outstanding.
The group delivered a mihi (a greeting), a karanga (welcome call) and an action song called ‘Whakanuia a Matariki’. We can be proud of our senior Kapa Haka group.

Rippa

We had an amazing day at the Rippa Tournament a few weeks ago! It was great to see our athletes displaying the Takapuna School Values on and off the field! Thank you to all the parents who helped make this day possible.

Mitey – Mental Health Education:

Mitey is a New Zealand specific, Years 1-8 approach to embedding mental health education in both teaching and learning. It was developed by the Sir John Kirwan Foundation. Our kura is now in the second year on our Mitey journey.

Children will learn how to recognise and respond to their own mental health and those of others. Cultivating good mental health helps us cope with life’s ups and downs, and to feel comfortable asking for help from others when we need it.

All the teachers at Takapuna Primary are engaging with Professional Development from our expert coaches working for Mitey.
