Learner-led open morning session:
As part of our ongoing reporting to families, we invite you to come along next week Wednesday 20 November at 8:15am to 8:45am for your children to share some of their learning with you. Classrooms will open at 8:15am. To ensure this is a successful experience we ask that:
- You spend time with your child, being curious and positive about their learning
- You are not tempted to go through learning books of other children to make comparisons
- Siblings are welcome, but we encourage you to spend time with your child rather than the siblings taking over (especially older siblings)
- This is different to a 1:1 teacher conference – please book in a time with you child’s teacher if you want to discuss anything in particular
- If you have more than one child, we encourage you to divide up the time as best possible or do contact your child’s teacher to discuss any other options
Students/families leaving at the end of 2025:
If you are planning to move from Takapuna Primary at the end of this year, please email the office – office@tps.school.nz and let us know as soon as possible. We rely on accurate information for class placements and 2025 planning.
Playground will be completed by Friday 15 November:
We are very excited to announce that our playground is ready to be opened tomorrow (Friday, 15 November). We have a little ceremony to celebrate and then an opportunity for students to have a turn. It will then be open from after school for all. Thanks to everyone who has supported the build. It has been a great year for Takapuna Primary to be able to invest and improve our outside spaces.

Year 5 & 6 Camp:
Camp Year 5 & 6 students
What a fantastic three days Whānau Kererū had at Camp Carey last week. Students participated in an amazing variety of activities including a Flying Fox, Confidence Course, Swing Shot, Archery and Bush Walking. We had a fantastic group of parent helpers that helped facilitate many activities and also assisted in coordinating meal times.
As part of the free choice activities the students got to do a fantastic Water Slide, a Burma Trail and on the second night, a Camp Fire with marshmallows to roast.
It was so rewarding for all the teachers to see students try activities that pushed them outside of their comfort zone and the subsequent pride they felt in their abilities. Camp is a highlight for students and we see the tremendous benefits for all the students that participate.

Kapa Haka:
On Friday 1st November, our senior Kererū Kapa Haka group joined other local schools at the inaugural Pupuke Kapa Haka Festival. The event was hosted by Milford Primary School, and the day began with a pōhiri delivered by the host school.
It was a colourful festival with each school dressed in their beautiful kapa haka uniforms. Our group performed their bracket of waiata, chants and haka to the other school children, parents and teachers.
Now the group is practicing to perform at the Onepoto Primary Cultural School festival on Friday 22nd November. Our school is very proud of the Kererū Kapa haka group for their achievements in both the school and community.

IMPORTANT – Facebook:
We have launched a Takapuna Primary School Facebook page, so we can share the fabulous things our students, teachers and community are achieving on a more regular basis. The purpose is to share general events, however your main communication from the school will remain as HERO. Please note it is a public forum and will be accessible to a wider community than TPS families. This means extended families and friends from around the world can view our posts. When you enrol your child, you were asked if you give permission for online publications, this includes Facebook. I urge you to get in touch with the office, if you have changed your mind and do not want us to publish your child’s photo online including Facebook.

T.P.S Sports Day & Athletics:
We would love it if you could join us on Thursday 28th November when we will hold our whole school sports and athletics day. Students will be allocated to teams and work through a rotation of activities that include both track and field events alongside more relaxed and collaborative sports such as jump jam and egg and spoon races. We will start at 9:30 am and aim to finish the rotations by 1:00 pm. After lunch we will hold year-group running races.
These events are an opportunity for students to come together as a school and celebrate our skills. They will not determine who participates in the cluster athletics day.
Each team will be designated a colour and we are encouraging the students to wear a t-shirt, hat, hair ties or ribbons in their team colour. Your child’s teacher will communicate with you at the end of this week about which colour team your child or children are in.
In the event of rain the event will be cancelled and notice posted on Hero at 8:00 am.
Timings for the day are below, these are approximate:
9:15am School assembles on the court in their colour teams
9:30am First rotation begins
11:00-11:30am Morning tea
11:30am Rotations resume
12:30pm Colour relay race
1:00pm Lunch
2:00pm Tūī & Kererū running races

TPS Lakers Basketball Team:
I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of the TPS Lakers Basketball team.
Even without regular practice sessions, the kids have continued to perform remarkably well.
Win or lose, every team member has consistently displayed positive sportsmanship and strong game awareness, and they never hesitate to share candy with the opposing team after the game.
The teamwork and kotahitanga among our players are truly admirable. They support one another without reservation, especially encouraging teammates who may be less skilled.
During challenging moments in the game, they make adjustments together, always seeking to uplift each other. It’s heartwarming to witness how, after every game, a teammate will pat another on the back and say things like, “Great catch on that play!” or “You were so fast today!” or “Thanks for blocking that player for me!”
The Lakers’ spirit extended beyond their own team during the recent training sessions with Oscar from Westlake Boys’ School. The kids were engaged and enthusiastic, making the most of each session. Although they’ve only trained with Oscar three times, they surprised him with a heartfelt, signed card at the end of the last session. Both Oscar and his mom were deeply moved by the gesture, as were I and the other parents on our team. As both a parent and the team manager, I couldn’t be prouder of our players. They represent TPS with such integrity and heart, and it’s a privilege to be part of their journey.
Warm regards
Team Manager

Mitey – Mental Health Education:
Mitey is a New Zealand specific, Years 1-8 approach to embedding mental health education in both teaching and learning. It was developed by the Sir John Kirwan Foundation. Our kura is now in the second year on our Mitey journey.
Children will learn how to recognise and respond to their own mental health and those of others. Cultivating good mental health helps us cope with life’s ups and downs, and to feel comfortable asking for help from others when we need it.
All the teachers at Takapuna Primary are engaging with Professional Development from our expert coaches working for Mitey.
