Kia ora TPS whānau,

3 way conferences:

We have scheduled Parent/student/teacher conferences on Wednesday 28 & Thursday 29 August. This is an opportunity to book a time (15 mins) per student with their classroom teacher. Teachers will be able to share information on how your child is progressing. This is a very important meeting, we ask that all families book a suitable time.

PLEASE NOTE – on Wednesday 28 August, school will FINISH EARLY at 1:00pm, with conferences starting from 1:30pm. Thursday 29 August, school will finish at the normal time of 3:00pm. To book your time please go to:

https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/759vm

After school care (Wednesday 28 August)
We will be open from 1:00pm with an extra $15.00 charge per child for the extra hours. Our 6:00pm close time does not change.
If your child normally attends aftercare on a Wednesday there is no need to get in touch, I will assume they will attend from 1:00pm.
If your child does not attend on a Wednesday and you require our services, please let me know.
kellifourie@gmail.com or 021 0272 4117

If your child attends Year 3 – 6 ESOL classes in Term 3 with Tasha Giles, feel free to book using the code below. Please note 3 way conferences are NOT available for any Year 2 ESOL children attending ESOL.

Parent/whānau thoughts on out of school (before/after) services:

We are seeking to understand what the needs of our school community are regarding out of school care services (both before/after school). We encourage all families to share their thoughts even if your child/children do not attend any out of school care services.

Please click here to fill in a quick google form.

Staffing News:

We welcome Rakesh to TPS! Rakesh will be taking over as Caretaker from Suresh, who leaves us tomorrow. We wish Suresh all the best in his new job and thank him very much for his service to the school.

Student leaders:

Our fabulous student leaders have been very busy working on some special projects to help around the school.

One group has started running some lunchtime games and have had some great success with this so far. The other two groups have been planning and creating videos to help share important messages about how we should do things at school, including good behaviour choices and looking after school property.

These videos will be used for years to come to help reinforce these important messages with all of our ākonga. Through working on these three projects, the student leaders are developing their skills in collaboration, problem solving, creative thinking and more!

Kiwi & Tui Cross Country:

Whānau Kiwi and Tūī had a wonderful time at our annual cross country event yesterday. Thank you to all the families who were able to come along and support our runners. Our teachers were so proud of the learners who all tried their best and challenged themselves.

Young Ocean Explorers:

Riley from Young Ocean Explorers came to visit today as part of science focus this term. Riley presented an engaging and interactive session which the kids thoroughly enjoyed. She shared important messages about how our ocean eco system works and how we can work together to care for our oceans.

Regards, Devika and the TPS team.

Taking care of our neighbours:

We received a call from a lovely elderly neighbour. She asked if we could talk to our students about taking great care around elderly people, particularly when riding their bikes on footpaths.

She did not experience a collision, but was just feeling very vulnerable, sharing the same space as children on their bikes – being so fraile.

Kindly talk to your children about respecting our elderly neighbours, so they can feel safe. We will also mention this at Assembly.

Thanks from the team at Parenting Place:

Thank you for coming along to our Parenting Talk. We’re so excited to have you join us in our mission: supporting parents (like you!) to build strong family relationships.

If attending the talk was the first time we’ve ‘met’, you may not know that parentingplace.nz offers encouraging courses, insightful articles and content to support you – whatever stage of the parenting journey you’re at.

While you’re checking us out, you can sign up for regular email newsletters featuring the latest parenting advice and inspo (no spam, we promise!)

Finally, if you missed the chance to get 20% off the parenting resources in our online store, complete this short and sweet survey to share your thoughts on the Parenting Talk you attended.

We would like to introduce our new Wellbeing Mentor to you. Liz will be helping out in our school from September.

Experience: I have a background in secondary school teaching
spanning 40 years, teaching English and Music. I currently visit
trainee secondary school teachers to do professional observations.
I am married with 3 adult children and have 6 wonderful
grandchildren, some of whom live overseas.
I have run children’s holiday programmes and am currently kept on
my toes teaching a lively Sunday School class.
When we moved to Auckland our daughter aged 8 attended
Takapuna Primary. I enjoyed helping with a school production while
she was there.
Fun Fact: We used to have a car with no starter motor and I would
have to crank it to get it going.
I am easy going and constantly intrigued by children’s curiosity and perceptiveness.

Takapuna Beach Fossil Trip:

Tūī learners enjoyed exploring the Takapuna Fossil Forest this week as part of inquiry learning about fossils. Before Lake Pupuke was created by a volcanic eruption, the area where the Takapuna boat ramp is now was a large forest. Now you can see many tree stumps, including large Kauri, fossilised by the black lava rock.

Mitey – Mental Health Education:

Mitey is a New Zealand specific, Years 1-8 approach to embedding mental health education in both teaching and learning. It was developed by the Sir John Kirwan Foundation. Our kura is now in the second year on our Mitey journey.

Children will learn how to recognise and respond to their own mental health and those of others. Cultivating good mental health helps us cope with life’s ups and downs, and to feel comfortable asking for help from others when we need it.

All the teachers at Takapuna Primary are engaging with Professional Development from our expert coaches working for Mitey.
